Saved By The Smell

Jack sat with his laptop leaning on his lap, staring at a picture of Ailsa.

He’d checked out her Facebook page, checking for flaws in her character. As far as he could see, there wasn’t anything to find fault with. She didn’t swear, never posted anything nasty about anyone, avoided the sickly sweet and, best of all, listed her status as single.

At the top of the page, he allowed his cursor to hover over the Add Friend. “What do you think?”

Sheba pricked her ears up. It seemed to be more of a ‘yes’ than a ‘no’.

“You’re right. What have I got to lose?” His finger clicked on the icon and he’d made the connection. Now he could relax and settle down for an afternoon of movie magic on the TV.

His computer bleeped and a speech bubble appeared at the bottom of his screen.

Ailsa: Hi.

His heart leaped. No way was he ready for a conversation. His fingers typed without waiting for an order.

Jack: Hi.

Ailsa: How’s the mouth?

He’d practically forgotten about it.

Jack: Sore.

Ailsa: Poor thing.

She was quick.

Jack: I’ll mend.

Ailsa: No kissing for you this weekend.

Was she flirting?

Jack: No?

Was he?

Ailsa: What’s that they say about kissing things get better?

Jack: Might be worth a try.

His heart was racing.

Ailsa: Always fixes my woes.

She was definitely flirting.

Jack: When can you come over?

It was like someone else was controlling his thoughts.

Ailsa: Sorry, I’m in Newcastle. A gig.

His body shrank as he realised he’d got the wrong end of the stick. His fingers froze.

Ailsa: You still there?

Jack: Yes.

Ailsa: Sorry again.

Jack: Never mind.

Ailsa: xxx Try these instead.

Jack: Better already.

Ailsa: CoffeeMonday?

Jack: Something stronger?

Ailsa: Strong coffee?

Jack: LOL.

Had he really written that? Surely she’d think he was a complete nerd.

Ailsa: A pint?

Jack: I’ll check my diary.

Ailsa: The Espy?

Jack: 1 o’clock.

Ailsa: It’s a date.

Jack: Is it?

The bubble stayed on the screen unanswered. Jack held his breath waiting for the response. His lungs started to hurt when the beep came.

Ailsa: The 11th August, I believe. See you there.

Jack: Not if I see you first. :)

Ailsa: ;) x

A cross. Was it a goatee or a kiss?

A kiss, surely. She departed with a kiss. His tummy fluttered.

Sheba dropped her lead at Jack’s feet, put her paws on the edge of the chair and breathed straight into his face. What the hell had she been eating?

Jack picked up the lead and stood up. He realised that Sheba’s need for a walk was a timely interruption. It would stop him wondering about that kiss and fretting about what the hell he was doing arranging to meet up with this stranger for a drink. He might even say that he’d been saved by the smell. The thought made him smile. He went over to the, slipped his shoes on and take the keys down from the hook.
